Bowery

A neighbourhood of sailors, immigrants, paupers, gambling houses, taverns, drunkards, bribe takers, and prostitutes: such used to be the reputation, in latter half of the 19th century of Bowery Street, a famous New York City thoroughfare commonly known as 'The Bowery' and located near the port, in the heart of Manhattan. The same period also saw the opening in 'The Bowery' of a number of theatres where popular shows began to be performed. This made theatre popular among broader sections of the public, starting a new fashion in the US: that of musicals and variety shows. Although 'The Bowery' had remained an empoverisched neighbourhood, from the 1960s onwards the mixing together of disparate ethnic groups and the crisscrossing of artists and musicians combined to restyle it into the street of trendy jazz, punk and new wave nightclubs. If 'The Bowery' is now a completely redeveloped area, it is precisely thanks to the revival brought about by the opening of those fashionable nightclubs. The brand Bowery aims to reflect the style that was created in that neighbourhood, with vintage-washed and over-dyed effects on their items.
